As a Brit in Hong Kong, on a US dominated internet I sometimes run into currency conversion issues. XE.com is my converter of choice.
But then as a Firefox using Brit, in Hong Kong, on a US dominated internet, I figured (see the US influence at work...) that there had to be an extension available to ease my irritation.
It turns out there are several - but I haven't yet tried them as I was sidetracked into making this post....
One that seemed to have good reviews is ViewMyCurrency. The developer has an idiosyncratic choice of domain name. But at least it's not all false advertising - he has a real recipe for HamsterSoup as well.
The potential for mischief (and psychological scarring) is huge. As we don't have a hamster, I may just leave it on the screen at home, and claim I was looking for a birthday treat for the cats...

I receive a monthly
newsletter about emerging
technlogies, the most recent copy of which linked to a blog
post about an article
in the NYTimes: Parents 'Forced' to Upgrade Kids' Social
Technology, to keep up with the Joneses kids.
The post also linked to a longer article on "Technology and Happiness" which in turn led me to a do google search for "mindfulness meditation" and hence to this page at www.meditationcentre.com which describes the first meditation technique I learned around 20 years ago at the East/West Centre in London. It also reminded me
of how much I enjoy the calm I can feel when I'm practising regularly, and
second, how common is the connection between meditation/spirituality and a
complete lack of design sense.
Really, there is a
significant number of people who seem to use their new found mental peace to
produce some of the most visually distracting and
difficult-to-read
websites you'll ever see. Who told these people that
pond-scum-green was the way to go?. There's also a tendency to choose odd pale pastel colours with images repeated behind the text. I
can almost hear the new age ambient noise in the background. Then there
are the sites that you just know, are going to try to
extract money from you before the page
has completed loading.
I prefer the ones
that go for the minimalist
approach, or simple
designs. At least with these I might stay around long enough to look
at some of the content.

From time to time I find a site which amuses me and in the usual
mindless way I send it on to a select handful of people. Others
do the same, and I receive the mails, I look, I smile, and I forget.
Then, remembering that that one of my goals for this site is to keep up the momentum of posting regularly I thought - here's an easy source of posts for days when nothing else springs to mind, and click - my amusements category was born. And should anyone object to future posts on the grounds that they're not funny - remember they're not here to make you laugh, they're here because they made me smile. |
